River City Theology Conference featuring Rev. Sean Morris on February 23-25. Topic: “Christ and His Benefits.”

We are excited to announce that on February 23-25, River City will be having its first ever weekend theology conference. Our featured speaker is Rev. Sean Morris. Rev. Morris serves as the Associate Pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Sean holds a Master of Divinity degree from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, a Master of Theology degree in Scottish Church History and Theology from the University of Glasgow, and is pursuing a Ph.D in Systematic Theology at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also helped found the Blue Ridge Institute for Theological Education (BRITE), a presbytery-based theological training institution serving students throughout Appalachia and even around the world, at which he served as an instructor and academic dean. Sean and his wife Sarah have four children. 

The topic of this conference is “Christ and His Benefits.” The schedule for the conference is as follows:

Friday, February 23: Lesson 1–“The God-Man: Full of Kindness and Compassion” (6 PM)

Saturday, February 24: Lesson 2–“Second Adam, Obedient Son” (10 AM with fellowship lunch to follow)

Sunday, February 25: Morning Worship Service Sermon–“Risen King” (9 AM, with coffee hour to follow at the Ritcheys’ house)

Sunday February 25: Evening Worship Service Sermon–“Returning Judge” (6:15 PM)

A Prelude to Acts

In 2024, we plan to begin a study of the book of Acts. Before the New Year, it would be fitting to look at the end of the Gospel of Luke (Luke 24:36-53), as it serves as something of a prelude or preface to the book of Acts. Luke wrote both of these volumes, and so it is best when they are read together. Luke ends with the ascension of Christ, and Acts provides a little more detail on the ascension. Also, the end of Luke challenges us to have a deeper understanding of Scripture and specifically a better understanding of the Old Testament. Will we, in the new year, commit ourselves to a deeper understanding of the Word of God?

This week at River City Reformed, we are concluding our study of the Songs of Christmas with the study of The Song of Moses and the Lamb. Our Scripture passage is Revelation 15:1-4. Come and join us as we worship the triumphant and victorious Lamb together.

Please join us this Lord’s Day for our morning and evening worship services at River City Reformed. We will continue our study through the Songs of Christmas. In the morning service at 9 AM we will consider Luke 2:1-21, studying the song of the angels, or the “Gloria,” and in the evening service at 6:15 PM we will study Luke 2:22-38, focusing especially on verses 28-35, considering the song of Simeon, or the “Nunc Dimittis.”

Benedictus

This Lord’s Day at River City Reformed, we will be continuing our study of the Songs of Christmas by looking at the song of Zechariah, or the Benedictus. Our sermon text is Luke 1:67-80.

This song, much like the song of Mary, gives praise to God and points to the salvation He has promised in Jesus Christ. It also gives special attention to the ministry of John the Baptist as the forerunner who proclaims Christ and His salvation.
