As we considered this past week the significance of the Day of Pentecost in redemptive history, this Lord’s Day we will consider the words of Peter’s very powerful sermon on that day in Acts 2:14-41. Peter proclaims Christ clearly and boldly from the Old Testament to those in his midst, and we are told that “there were added that day about three thousand souls.” (Acts 2:41)

We are excited to announce that on February 23-25, River City will be having its first ever weekend theology conference. Our featured speaker is Rev. Sean Morris. Rev. Morris serves as the Associate Pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Sean holds a Master of Divinity degree from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, a Master of Theology degree in Scottish Church History and Theology from the University of Glasgow, and is pursuing a Ph.D in Historical Theology at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also helped found the Blue Ridge Institute for Theological Education (BRITE), a presbytery-based theological training institution serving students throughout Appalachia and even around the world, at which he served as an instructor and academic dean. Sean and his wife Sarah have four children.
The topic of this conference is “Christ and His Benefits.” The schedule for the conference is as follows:

This week at River City Reformed, we continue our study of the book of Acts and come to Acts 2:1-13. As we consider this section of the book of Acts, we will think about the significance of the day of Pentecost both for the Apostles and for the church today.

The significance of the day of Pentecost in Acts becomes clear even in chapter 1. But the Lord prepares His Apostles in Acts 1:12-26 for that important event in redemptive history. He does this by their gathering together to pray with others, and also their hearing Peter’s exposition of the Word. But He also does this by granting one to take the place of Judas, who “turned aside to go to his own place.” (Acts 1:24)
This passage is quite sobering as we consider the reality of Judas’ grievous and unrepentant sin. And at the same time, we also see that the Lord always provides for His church. One theologian has said, “The Lord always gives His church what she needs when she needs it.” We may not always understand that or understand the Lord’s timing, but His ways are always right. That’s certainly what we see in the provision of Matthias to the Apostolic ministry.

This Lord’s Day morning at River City we plan to begin a new series of sermons on the book of Acts. Please join us as we study this great book detailing the ministry of the Apostles after the ascension of Jesus Christ. We hope this study will be honoring to the Lord and of great benefit to the people of God.
On Lord’s Day evenings during our prayer meetings, we plan to begin a study of the attributes of God. Jesus says in John 17:3, “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”
