Joy Unshakable: And My God Will Supply Every Need

Joy Unshakable: And My God Will Supply Every Need

This week at River City Reformed, we will conclude our study of Paul’s letter to the Philippians. In the last section of Philippians, Paul teaches us about true Christian contentment. Contentment that is true and solid and lasting is found only in knowing Jesus Christ and in the strength that He supplies. One of the most famous verses in the Bible is found in the context of this passage: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Joy Unshakable: Practical Concerns

Joy Unshakable: Practical Concerns

In the book of Philippians, Paul demonstrates that theological truths and practical concerns are integrally related. The Christian life is grounded in biblical truth. In Philippians 4:2-9, we will see that Paul exhorts his hearers to genuine Christian piety and that this is grounded in the doctrines that he has already proclaimed throughout this letter.

Paul reminds his readers of the need for unity and peace among believers (vs. 2-3), a lifestyle and prayer life confident in the character and power of God (vs. 4-7) and a mindset consistent with our heavenly citizenship (vs. 8-9).

Joy Unshakable: Our Citizenship is in Heaven

Joy Unshakable: Our Citizenship is in Heaven

As we come to the conclusion of Philippians 3, this week considering verses 3:17-4:1, we are reminded that by virtue of belonging to Jesus, “our citizenship is in heaven.” (Phil. 3:20) Paul encourages a heavenly perspective, following godly examples, as opposed to a perspective which sets its hope and mind on earthly things. The urgency of Paul’s message brings this chapter of Philippians to a fitting conclusion.

Joy Unshakable: Pressing On

Joy Unshakable: Pressing On

As we come to Philippians 3:12-16, Paul teaches us about pressing on in the Christian life. One does not attain in this life a sinless perfection, but looks forward to the hope of eternity with God. And as one presses toward greater likeness to Christ, looking toward eternity with God, they have the confidence of a salvation already won in Christ, and of the fact that God will keep them to the very end.

Joy Unshakable: “Nothing in My Hand I Bring”

Joy Unshakable: “Nothing in My Hand I Bring”

In Philippians 3:1-11, Paul seeks to offer a word of warning to those in the Philippian church about false teachers who seek to trouble them. These false teachers are attempting to add extra requirements to the Gospel and to what it means to be a Christian. In so doing, they are encouraging “confidence in the flesh,” but Paul is clear that those who truly worship God aright “put no confidence in the flesh” (verse 3).

In our passage, Paul speaks about his former life as a Pharisee who had trusted in his own righteousness and makes it clear that it is of no saving value to him. He uses strong terms, “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ…” (verses 8-9). Paul would have us trust, not in our own righteousness, but in Christ, the Savior who offers us His own righteousness.
