Call the Sabbath a Delight

As we come to the fourth commandment in our study of Exodus 20:1-17, it is perhaps the command that is most often under acknowledged or misunderstood. Some see it as unnecesarily burdensome, and others see it as no longer binding on the people of God. That command is, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” (Exodus 20:8-11)

This week at River City Reformed, we will consider the Sabbath and what is truly being said in the fourth commandment. We will see that the Sabbath is still binding, but also that is a great blessing to the people of God. Isaiah 58:13-14 says, “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

It is God who nourishes our souls on the Day of rest and worship which He has given to us. And the Sabbath Day itself points us to the hope of the Gospel–that the crucified Christ has risen on the first Day of the week and that we now joyfully await His return.

We meet together on the first Day of the week in the public worship of God in order to meet with God Himself and with His people. We are to devote the Day to the rest and worship of God, trusting that God Himself is at work in us. Would you join us this Lord’s Day at 9 AM as we consider the fourth commandment together? Men’s Study of the Westminster Confession of Faith

The men of River City Reformed are studying the Westminster Confession of Faith on Thursday nights at 8 PM.

The Westminster Confession is a detailed summary of the main teachings of the Bible. In reading it together, we are driven also to dive more into the Scriptures themselves. We hope that the Lord will use this study to cultivate a greater love for the truth. This is the Confession to which officers in our denomination are expected to subscribe, but it will be a beneficial study even if you do not believe you are called to church office, as it will encourage a deeper knowledge of the Bible. We hope you can join us for this ongoing study at River City Reformed.

Morning Worship Service to Begin this Lord’s Day at 9 AM

We are excited to announce that in God’s kindness, River City Reformed Church will begin a morning service at 9 AM at 9820 W Markham St. (in the sanctuary of Faith United Methodist Church). If you have been looking for a church to visit in Little Rock, AR, please join us for our new morning worship service.

It is a joy to enter into this new chapter as a church together. Please pray that the Lord would be honored in this move. We are grateful for our many years being hosted by St. Andrews, and we are grateful for the kind hospitality of our new hosts as well.

Behold the Lamb

The Apostle John in his Prologue (the first 18 verses) goes to great lengths to demonstrate the truth that the Son is God–He is the eternal Word, and He has made God known. In verses 19-34, we come to the testimony of John the Baptist. John the Baptist is clear that he is not the Christ. Rather, his entire mission is to point people to Jesus, the true Christ.

When John sees Jesus, he cries out “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (verse 29) Christ, whose birth we celebrate at Christmastime is the Lamb who has come into the world to be slain for sinners. He is the One who has made His people right with God by dying as their Substitute.

We are grateful that December 25, Christmas Day, falls on the Lord’s Day this year. What better way to rejoice at Christ’s birth than to worship with the people of God? We will consider what John the Baptist teaches us about Jesus this Lord’s Day during worship at 5 PM at The Commons at St. Andrews Church in Little Rock. Christmas Service and Fellowship this Lord’s Day Evening at River City Reformed

This Lord’s Day evening we will have a special Christmas service at The Commons at St. Andrews Church. We will meet for worship at 5 PM and stay for a fellowship afterwards in The Commons. Please consider bringing a dish or dessert to share.

Our worship service will include several carols for us to sing together as well as a sermon on the incarnation from John 1:14-18. We hope to see you there, as well as any family members or friends you may bring.

It is important to note that this service will not take the place of our service December 25–we will meet for gathered worship that Lord’s Day.
