This week at River City Reformed, we will conclude our study of Paul’s letter to the Philippians. In the last section of Philippians, Paul teaches us about true Christian contentment. Contentment that is true and solid and lasting is found only in knowing Jesus Christ and in the strength that He supplies. One of the most famous verses in the Bible is found in the context of this passage: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

In the book of Philippians, Paul demonstrates that theological truths and practical concerns are integrally related. The Christian life is grounded in biblical truth. In Philippians 4:2-9, we will see that Paul exhorts his hearers to genuine Christian piety and that this is grounded in the doctrines that he has already proclaimed throughout this letter.

Paul reminds his readers of the need for unity and peace among believers (vs. 2-3), a lifestyle and prayer life confident in the character and power of God (vs. 4-7) and a mindset consistent with our heavenly citizenship (vs. 8-9).

As we come to the conclusion of Philippians 3, this week considering verses 3:17-4:1, we are reminded that by virtue of belonging to Jesus, “our citizenship is in heaven.” (Phil. 3:20) Paul encourages a heavenly perspective, following godly examples, as opposed to a perspective which sets its hope and mind on earthly things. The urgency of Paul’s message brings this chapter of Philippians to a fitting conclusion.
